Help put 110,000 books in the hands of Wake County schoolchildren
From January 5th – February 15th, WAKE Up and Read will collect new and gently-used books for children ages birth-12. Our goal this year is to collect 110,000 books. At the end of the school year, every student at our 13 WAKE Up and Read elementary schools and the neighboring child care facilities and community centers will be able to choose and keep 10 books to help build their home libraries. Our aim is to ensure that every child in our community has the opportunity to develop a love for reading.
Reading proficiency by third grade is one of the most important indicators that a child is on track to graduate from high school on time, college and career ready. More than 33% of Wake County third-graders are not reading at grade level, and we know that poverty increases the risk – nationally, 80% of children in low-income households are not reading at grade level.
WAKE Up and Read is a community coalition made up of 30+ committed organizations working together toward one common goal — improving childhood literacy.
United behind a shared belief that literacy is a RIGHT for all, not a privilege for the advantaged, WAKE Up and Read is focused on connecting families, offering programs, and aligning services to move the needle on third-grade reading proficiency and school success in Wake County.
